Business or Employment Stress

Running a business or working on a consistent basis can be stressful. Maybe you have a big upcoming project you’re working on or have difficulty navigating relationships with your co-workers or employers. Although we know you can’t control everything that happens during the workday, it’s common that you want to be able to feel in control and manage how you respond to stress and anxiety during work so that it can lead you to being successful and feeling accomplished.

Stress and anxiety in any job can be normal and is good as it jumpstarts productivity and helps to prioritize tasks. It can give “just enough” motivation to complete goals. However, too much stress and anxiety at work can lead to burnout and job dissatisfaction if recognized too late. Often, we don’t necessarily realize we’re beginning to burn out until we’re already experiencing signs of burnout. This can include disruptions to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Some typical signs you may be stressed or burnt out due to work may include:

  • You’re doing the bare minimum or procrastinating more at work

  • You constantly feel overwhelmed doing even small tasks

  • You’re experiencing difficulties with concentrating

  • You’re neglecting your normal routines at home or at work, especially self-care routines

  • You’re disconnecting or dissociating while at work

  • You’re frequently irritated – both at work as well as outside of work

  • You’re experiencing frequent headaches, nausea, or fatigue

  • You’re not eating healthy, choosing healthy options, or tasks like cooking seem like too much work

  • You’re having difficulties with falling asleep, staying asleep, sleeping too much, or feeling rested after sleeping

  • You’re experiencing muscle tension in certain areas of the body

  • You’re experiencing social withdrawal and decreased sex drive

  • You’re experiencing issues with your stomach and bowel movements

Stress can lead us to second guess our decisions and whether we made the right choice with our business or employment. This is why practicing daily stress management techniques can help you to navigate through stress on a day-to-day basis and prevent the latter signs of burnout and questioning “Is this job still something for me or something that makes me happy?” Some suggestions of stress management techniques can include taking mindful breaks where you purposely unplug from thinking about your work such as taking a walk, practicing deep breathing, or even scheduling vacation days in advance. However, sometimes we need more guidance on how to build healthier work habits or balancing our work and personal lives.

Our therapists at Miami Vibes Counseling Center have expertise in helping you regain control over your stress and feel more accomplished and productive in your work or business routine. They are ready to provide their guidance on building better habits, practicing self-care, and discussion on how to communicate your needs and feelings effectively to advocate for yourself with your work- or business-related relationships. If you have been feeling overwhelmed running your business or doing your normal work routine, it may be time for you to talk with a therapist about business or employment related stress.
