Online Therapy in Florida

Online therapy, also known as virtual counseling or teletherapy, is a virtual appointment between an individual and therapist. . It allows an individual and a therapist to continue services with more flexibility and convenience.

Online therapy can be administered through any device that has an internet connection such as a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Studies have also shown that online therapy has also been found to be just as effective in mental health treatment as traditional in-person talk-therapy services.

Who Can Benefit from Online Therapy?

Online therapy is a great option for a variety of people for many different reasons such as increased access to available and better-suited therapists for you without having to worry about commutes and location. People of various ages can benefit from virtual counseling, but that does not mean that online therapy is best for everyone. You and your therapist will have open communication in determining if online therapy can be effective for you and/or your family.

Below are some examples of when online therapy may be a better fit and when in-person services may be a better fit.

When Online Therapy Might Be A Good Fit

  • If you don’t mind and can still feel like you can make a connection with someone through a video call instead of meeting in-person

  • Those who work and can participate in therapy before or after work, during a break, or during a lunch break. That way they can meet with an online therapist without having to take time off, use PTO, or change their schedule too drastically

  • When the commute to and from the therapy practice may be too far.

  • When you may be sick but are well enough to still participate through a video call if you don’t want to reschedule your appointment

  • Last-minute emergencies that may keep you from being able to drive to your appointment (such as you having to now watch the kids, etc.)

When Virtual Counseling is Not the Best Fit

  • Children and families seeking play therapy or more directive care

  • If you or your child prefer to see a therapist in person or enjoy in-person interaction and connection

  • There are too many distractions keeping you and/or your child engaged and attentive through the delivery of online therapy services

  • If your insurance doesn’t cover virtual counseling or stops covering online therapy services

Online Therapy Etiquette

While online therapy can be more convenient, there are still rules in place for it to be effective. Your online therapist will be sure to go over these rules in more detail with you to ensure you are getting the most out of your service. Violations of some of these etiquettes can result in the discussion and potential termination/discharge of mental health services with your therapist.

  • Online therapy appointments cannot be delivered while in a moving vehicle. This also applies to individuals who are passengers and may not be driving but are wanting to receive services. This is for your own safety as well as the safety of others.

  • You do not necessarily have to be in your own home to be able to engage in online therapy. But you must be in a private, safe, and secure location with minimal distractions to be able to engage in the session. Examples of this include your home, your office, or a parked car. Your online therapist will confirm during each session your exact location in case of emergencies.

  • Please keep your camera and microphone turned on at all times.

  • You cannot schedule sessions with your online therapist while you are not in Florida. That is UNLESS your therapist is licensed to practice in the state in which you will be.

  • While you do not have to dress formally for your appointment, dress appropriately and comfortably as you would in a normal public setting.

You are allowed to switch to in-person services at any point during your treatment. If you prefer a hybrid option of some sessions in-person and some through virtual counseling, that is something you can discuss with your therapist.
